MEHER BABA QUOTES

"The experiences are so innumerable and varied, that the journey appears to be interminable and the Destination is ever out of sight. But the wonder of it is, when at last you reach your Destination you find that you had never travelled at all! It was a journey from here to Here."

There is no higher or lower goal. There is only one goal, Self-realisation.

I tell you all, with my Divine Authority, that you and I are not "WE," but "ONE.

"It is good to seek your true nature..time defeats all other ambitions"

One should live in the world, perform all legitimate duties and yet feel mentally detached from everything. One should be in the world but not of it

The answer has been so simple that it has been difficult to grasp. The root of all our difficulties, individual and social, is self-interest.

If you make Me your real Father, all differences and contentions between you, and all personal problems in connection with your lives, will become dissolved in the Ocean of My Love.

When true love is awakened in the aspirant, it leads him to the realization of God and ... The happiness of God-realization is self-sustained, eternally fresh and into existence.

Twelve Ways of Realizing Me
1. LONGING ... If you experience that same longing and thirst for Union with Me as one who has been lying for days in the hot sun of the Sahara experiences the longing for water, then you will realize Me.

2. PEACE OF MIND ... If you have the peace of a frozen lake, then too, you will realize Me.

3. HUMILITY ... If you have the humility of the earth which can be molded into any shape, then you will know Me.

4. DESPERATION ... If you experience the desperation that causes a man to commit suicide and you feel that you cannot live without seeing Me, then you will see Me.

5. FAITH ... If you have the complete faith that Kalyan had for his Master, in believing it was night, although it was day, because his Master said so, then you will know Me.

6. FIDELITY ... If you have the fidelity that the breath has in giving you company, even without your constantly feeling it, till the end of your life, that both in happiness and in suffering gives you company and never turns against you, then you will know Me.

7. CONTROL THROUGH LOVE ... When your love for Me drives away your lust for the things of the senses, then you realize Me.

8. SELFLESS SERVICE ... If you have the quality of selfless service unaffected by results, similar to that of the sun which serves the world by shining on all creation, on the grass in the field, on the birds in the air, on the beasts in the forest, on all mankind with its sinner and its saint, its rich and its poor, unconscious of their attitude towards it, then you will win Me.

9. RENUNCIATION ... If you renounce for Me everything physical, mental and spiritual, then you have Me.

10. OBEDIENCE ... If your obedience is spontaneous, complete and natural as the light is to the eye or smell is to the nose, then you come to Me.

11. SURRENDER ... If your surrender to Me is as wholehearted as that of one, who, suffering from insomnia, surrenders to sudden sleep without fear of being lost, then you have Me.

12. LOVE ... If you have that love for Me that St. Francis had for Jesus, then not only will you realize Me, but you will please Me.

In the world there are countless sadhus, mahatmas, mahapurushas, saints, yogis and walis, though the number of genuine ones is very, very limited. The few genuine ones are, according to their spiritual status, in a category of their own, which is neither on a level with the ordinary human being nor on a level with the state of the Highest of the High.

'The book that I shall make people readis the book of the heart, which holds the keyto the mystery of life'

"One has to go beyond the mind to experience the spiritual bliss of desirelessness."

"Divine love makes us true to ourselves and to others. . . Divine love is the solution to our difficulties and problems. It frees us from every kind of binding. It makes us speak truly, think truly, and act truly. It makes us feel one with the whole universe. Divine love purifies our hearts and glorifies our being."

A mind that is fast is sick. A mind that is slow is sound. A mind that is still is divine.

All life is an effort to achieve freedom from self-created entanglement. It is a desperate struggle to undo what had been done in ignorance; to throw away the accumulated burden of the past; to seek rescue from the debris piled high from temporary achievements and failures.

When every moment is rich with eternal significance, there is neither the lingering clinging to the dead past, nor a longing expectation for the future, but an integral living in the eternal now. It is only through such living that the spiritual infinity of the Truth can be realised in life.

In eternity, all is here and now. You have simply to become that which you are. You are God, the infinite existence.

'The redeeming act of the Perfect Master is a flash of the eternal in the midst of what is otherwise nothing but rigidly determined causation. This the mystery of Divine Grace..

“True knowledge is that knowledge which makes man after Self-Realization or union with God assert that his real Self is in everything and everybody.”

"If a man is dissatisfied with his environment, it is usually because he does not know how to properly adjust himself to the environment. Instead of thinking, 'How can I get out of this?' and becoming discouraged and depressed, one should think, ' What is the lesson that I should learn from this experience?'"

To love God in the most practical way is to love our fellow beings.

"I have come to sow the seed of love in your hearts so that, in spite of all superficial diversity which your life in illusion must experience and endure, the feeling of oneness, through love, is brought about amongst all the nations, creeds, sects and castes of the world."

When, from the depths of his heart, man desires something more lasting than wealth and something more real than material power, the wave will recede. Then peace will come, joy will come, light will come.

"When nothing upsets you, you are at the beginning of the path. When you desire nothing, you are half-way on the path; when nothing becomes everything, you are perfected."

Life becomes meaningful and all activities are purposeful only on the basis of faith in the enduring reality. The greatest romance possible in life is to discover this Eternal Reality in the midst of infinite change. Once, one has experienced this, one sees oneself in everything that lives, one recognises all of life as his life, everybody's interests as his own. One is no longer bound by habits of the past, no longer swayed by the hopes of the future - One lives in and enjoys each present moment to the full. There is no greater romance in life than this adventure in realization.

There is no Sadhana greater than love; there is no law higher than love; and there is no goal beyond love. God and love are identical, and one who has Divine Love has received God.

Working for and serving others, and undergoing so much strain, is very good. It wipes out past karmas, and even the new sanskaras which are created are very faint. So it is of tremendous spiritual benefit to work, serve, and undergo hardships for others. Sitting idle and always eating ready-cooked, served meals, without lifting a finger to help, is very bad spiritually. It creates very deep sanskaras which are difficult to wipe away.

The satisfaction derived from the fleeting things of life is not lasting; and our wants remain unfulfilled. There is thus a general sense of dissatisfaction accompanied by all kinds of worries.

Every second in Eternity every one of us is the same One Indivisible God who has no second.

The Seven Realities
1.  The only Real Existence is that of the One and only God, who is the Self in every (finite) self.
2.  The only Real Love is the love for this Infinity (God), which arouses an intense longing to see, know and become one with its Truth (God).
3.  The only Real Sacrifice is that in which, in pursuance of this love, all things, body, mind, position, welfare and even life itself, are sacrificed.
4.  The only Real Renunciation is that which abandons, even in the midst of worldly duties, all selfish thoughts and desires.
5.  The only Real Knowledge is the knowledge that God is the inner dweller in good people and so-called bad, in saint and so-called sinner. This knowledge requires you to help all equally as circumstances demand, without expectation of reward, and when compelled to take part in a dispute, to act without the slightest trace of enmity or hatred; to try to make others happy, with brotherly or sisterly feeling for each one; to harm no one in thought, word or deed, not even those who harm you.
6.  The only Real Control is the discipline of the senses from indulgence in low desires, which alone ensures absolute purity of character.
7.  The only Real Surrender is that in which the poise is undisturbed by any adverse circumstances, and the individual, amidst every kind of hardship, is resigned with perfect calm to the will of God.

Things that are Real are given and received in Silence.
Come prepared to receive not so much of My Words, but of My Silence.
God has been everlastingly working in Silence, unobserved, unheard, except by those who experience His Infinite Silence.
Drown all sound in My Silence to hear My Word of Words.

“As a single object seems to multiply itself to him who is drunk to excess, so Unity appears as plurality to those who are intoxicated with the wine of egoism.”

Someone asked, "Why is there suffering?" Baba gave this succinct reply: "Suffering is essential for the elimination of the ego, just as it was necessary for you to scrub and scrub in order to wash the stain from my coat."

The easiest and shortest way to God-realization is through the contact of a Sadguru, which means keeping the company or sahavas of such a Master, obeying him and serving him. This remedy is like a special express train which carries you straight to your destination.

"True love is no game of the faint-hearted and the weak; it is born of strength and understanding."

"Trust God completely and He will solve all your difficulties. Faithfully leave everything to Him and He will see to everything.
Love God completely and He will reveal Himself to you."

WORK
Do whatever needs to be done, but do it as a spiritual being.
As one who knows he is divine by nature and unlimited with the whole of life in essence.
Do it as if you are doing it for Me or for God.
Do it with equal consideration for the interests of all concerned, for God is equally in each.
Do it with utmost concentration, yet with utter detachment for the results of action.
Leave the fruit of action to Me or to God.
Do it as if it were the most important thing in the universe, yet let it be destroyed, or ignored, or ridiculed without concern, or let it be praised without elation.
Leave the response to Me or to God.
Do it, in short, as if you were not doing it at all, but as if I or God were doing it through you.

Reincarnation and God-realization

Evolution & Involution
According to Baba, each soul pursues conscious divinity by evolving: that is, experiencing itself as form in seven "kingdoms" — stone/metal, vegetable, worm, fish, bird, animal, and human. The soul gathers sanskaras (impressions) in each form, and these impressions lead to further evolution expressed by taking new, more complex forms. With each new form, increasing consciousness is gained until the soul experiences and discards forms from all the evolutionary kingdoms. The final form of the soul's evolution is the human form. Only in the human form can the soul experience its own divinity by entering into involution, through which it gradually eliminates all impressions that cause the appearance of separateness from God.
- Faith & Philosophy of Zoroastrianism, Meena Iyer

Reincarnation and God-realization
Baba asserts that in the human form, the soul becomes subject to reincarnation, the "involuntary process of association and disassociation of consciousness". The purpose of reincarnation is to provide the opportunity for liberation from illusion. The soul reincarnates innumerable times in all conditions of life encompassing the whole range of human experience (e.g. man/woman, rich/poor, powerful/weak, etc.). Through the experience of opposites, sanskaras gradually grow fainter and scarcer.

Meher Baba describes the process of God-realization this way: From out of the depth of unbroken Infinity arose the Question, "Who am I?" And to that Question there is the answer, "I am God!"

Meher Baba described heaven and hell as transitory and illusory states between incarnations: The states of heaven and hell are nothing but states of intensive experiences of the consciousness of the soul, experiencing either of the predominant counterparts of the opposite impressions while the soul is dissociated from the gross human body or form

Spiritual Poetry
I died as a mineral and became a plant,
I died as plant and rose to animal,
I died as animal and I was Man.
Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?
Yet once more I shall die as Man, to soar
With angels bless’d; but even from angelhood
I must pass on: all except God doth perish.
When I have sacrificed my angel-soul,
I shall become what no mind e’er conceived.
Oh, let me not exist! for Non-existence
Proclaims in organ tones,
To Him we shall return.

Questions and Answers - Shri Meher Baba, The Perfect Master

Question:
What, in his opinion, is the real meaning and purpose of life?
Answer:
It is to become identified with the Universal Self, and thus to experience Infinite Bliss, Power, and Knowledge; and finally, to be able to impart this experience to others, and make them see the One Indivisible Infinity existing in every phase of life.

Question:

Does Shri Meher Baba deny "matter"?
Answer:
He denies nothing because for him duality does not exist. To a God-realized personality, matter and spirit seem both to be merged in the Ocean of Divinity. He sees the "Divine One" playing simultaneously the different roles of the soul, spirit, mind, and body.

  • The soul exists independently of nature and matter, it is infinite, everlasting, and pure
  • The spirit, though having the same Divine essence as the soul, differs in that it is attached to the matter, the body, the world and the affairs of the world, but is unconscious of the Infinite Self. "Until it is realised, the spirit has to reincarnate."
  • The body is the medium through which the mind puts its desires, emotions, and thoughts into action on the physical plane.
  • The mind is the medium by which the spirit's experiences of matter are expressed.

The God-man teaches us the Truth that to realize the oneness of everything we must realize that spirit and matter, or the spiritual life and material life go hand-in-hand. When intellect and feeling, or head and heart, are equally developed and balanced, the apparent antithesis is resolved into the One Divine Consciousness.

Question:

How is it that the Master, being superhuman, still has hunger, thirst, and the need of sleep?
Answer:
The Master works on different planes - spiritual, mental, astral, and physical. And in order to work with different individuals at different stages of evolution he comes down to their level. Even when in the physical body he can aid highly advanced souls on the mental plane, less advanced souls on the astral plane, and ordinary human beings on the physical plane. He uses the appropriate body - spiritual, mental, subtle (astral), or physical - as the medium for his work on the required plane.

It is rightly said that the best teacher is who can come down to the level of his student. The Master comes down to the level of this world for its upliftment. The physical body, now his medium for work, has its physical needs - food and rest - which most usually be attended to physically. If necessary  he could live without food or water for weeks together.

The problem of the Divine and human elements in the God-man is difficult to comprehend, except for those who have had long personal contact with a Master. This attention to the requirements of the physical body of the Master, although outwardly similar, is inwardly different. It is not, as with ordinary men, actuated by any desire to satisfy hunger, thirst, or sleep, nor for the pleasure that gross men derive from eating, drinking, and other enjoyments. He tends to the physical needs of the body merely to preserve it as a medium for the great work that he has to be on this physical plane.

Similarly, people are puzzled by the everyday details of his material or physical life and activities; his natural, spontaneous manner; his appearance and dress; his long travels and frequent movements from place to place; his visits to theatres,  cinemas, and places of amusement; and so on. Though he may seem to enjoy them for themselves, they are necessitated by his work. The Master has no desires, and one have none to gratify. His only desire, if it could rightly be called a desire, is to enable every human being to realize the "Self" and, like him, to drink of the well of everlasting life.
