SWAMI VIVEKANANDA QUOTES

Fear is death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness, fear is wrong life. All the negative thoughts and ideas that are in the world have proceeded from this evil spirit of fear.
If there is one word that you find coming out like a bomb from the Upanishads, bursting like a bombshell upon masses of ignorance, it is the word fearlessness.

Have faith that you are all, my brave lads, born to do great things! Let not the barks of puppies frighten you, no, not even the thunderbolts of heaven, but stand up and work!
Have you got the will to surmount mountain-high obstructions? If the whole world stands against you sword in hand, would you still dare to do what you think is right?

The different forms of Yoga that we teach are adapted to the different natures and temperaments of men. We classify them in the following way, under four heads:(1) Karma-Yoga -- The manner in which a man realizes his own divinity through works and duty. (2) Bhakti-Yoga -- The realization of the divinity through devotion to, and love of, a Personal God. (3) Raja-Yoga -- The realization of the divinity through the control of mind.(4) Jnana-Yoga -- The realization of a man's own divinity through knowledge. These are all different roads leading to the same centre -- God.

Not even the deepest sleep will give you such a rest as meditation can. The mind goes on jumping even in deepest sleep. Just those few moments in meditation your brain has almost stopped. … You forget the body. … You feel such pleasure in it. You become so light. This perfect rest we will get in meditation.

All nature is bound by law, the law of its own action; and this law can never be broken. If you could break a law of nature, all nature would come to an end in an instant. There would be no more nature. He who attains freedom breaks the law of nature, and for him nature fades away and has no more power over him. Each one will break the law but once and forever, and that will end his trouble with nature.
Man begins to struggle and fight against nature. He makes many mistakes, he suffers. But eventually, he conquers nature and realizes his freedom. When he is free, nature becomes his slave.

How has all the knowledge in the world been gained but by the concentration of the powers of the mind? The world is ready to give up its secrets if we only know how to knock, how to give it the necessary blow. The strength and force of the blow come through concentration. There is no limit to the power of the human mind. The more concentrated it is, the more power is brought to bear on one point; that is the secret.

Talk to yourself at least once in a Day.. Otherwise you may miss a meeting with an EXCELLENT person in this World.

Mentally repeat: Let all beings be happy; Let all beings be peaceful; Let all beings be blissful. So do to the east, south, north and west. The more you do that the better you will feel yourself. You will find at last that the easiest way to make ourselves healthy is to see that others are healthy, and the easiest way to make ourselves happy is to see that others are happy. After doing that, those who believe in God should pray---not for money, not for health, not for heaven; pray for knowledge and light; every other prayer is selfish.

Experience is the only teacher we have. We may talk and reason all our lives, but we shall not understand a word of truth until we experience it ourselves.
Everything can be sacrificed for truth, but truth cannot be sacrificed for anything.

All knowledge that the world has ever received comes from the mind; the infinite library of the universe is in your own mind. The external world is simply the suggestion, the occasion, which sets you to study your own mind, but the object of your study is always your own mind.
All minds are the same, different parts of one Mind. He who knows one lump of clay has known all the clay in the universe. He who knows and controls his own mind, knows the secret of every mind, and has power over every mind.

Do not look back upon what has been done. Go ahead!
Don't look back—forward, infinite energy, infinite enthusiasm, infinite daring, and infinite patience—then alone can great deeds be accomplished.

If a man with an ideal makes a thousand mistakes, I am sure that the man without an ideal makes fifty thousand. Therefore, it is better to have an ideal.
Live for an ideal, and leave no place in the mind for anything else.
Fill the brain with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you, and out of that will come great work.
Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.
Hold the ideal a thousand times, and if you fail a thousand times, make the attempt once more.
If you have assimilated five ideas and made them your life and character, you have more education than any man who has got by heart a whole library.

Everyone must work in the universe. Only those who are perfectly satisfied with the Self, whose desires do not go beyond the Self, whose mind never strays out of the Self, to whom the Self is all in all, only those do not work. The rest must work.

Education is not filling the mind with a lot of facts. Perfecting the instrument and getting complete mastery of my own mind [is the ideal of education]. If I want to concentrate my mind upon a point, it goes there, and the moment I call, it is free [again].
Education may be described as a development of faculty, not an accumulation of words, or, as a training of individuals to will rightly and efficiently.

Prayer is divine love alone. When this highest ideal of love is reached, philosophy is thrown away. Who will then care of it? Freedom, salvation, nirvana- all are thrown away. Who cares to become free while in the enjoyment of divine love?

Discriminate within yourself between the real and the unreal. Have you not read the Vedanta? Even when you sleep, keep the sword of discrimination at the head of your bed, so that covetousness cannot approach you even in dream. Practicing such strength, renunciation will gradually come, and then you will see the portals of heaven are wide open to you.

It is always for greater joy that you give up the lesser. This is practical religion—the attainment of freedom, renunciation. Renounce the lower so that you may get the higher. Renounce! Renounce! Sacrifice! Give up! Not for zero. Not for nothing, but to get the higher.

Are you unselfish? That is the question. If you are, you will be perfect without reading a single religious book, without going into a single church or temple.
All the great systems of ethics preach absolute unselfishness as the goal. Supposing this absolute unselfishness can be reached by a man, what becomes of him? He is no more the little Mr. So-and-so; he has acquired infinite expansion. That little personality which he had before is now lost to him for ever; he has become infinite, and the attainment of this infinite expansion is indeed the goal of all religions and of all moral and philosophical teachings.

Go on doing good, thinking holy thoughts continuously; that is the only way to suppress base impressions... The chaste brain has tremendous energy and gigantic will-power.
Go on saying, I am free. Never mind if the next moment delusion comes and says, I am bound. Dehypnotize the whole thing.

Doing good to others is virtue (Dharma); injuring others is sin. Strength and manliness are virtue; weakness and cowardice are sin. Independence is virtue; dependence is sin. Loving others is virtue; hating others is sin. Faith in God and in one's own Self is virtue; doubt is sin. Knowledge of oneness is virtue; seeing diversity is sin. The different scriptures only show the means of attaining virtue.

Hold to the idea, I am not the mind, I see that I am thinking, I am watching my mind act, and each day the identification of yourself with thoughts and feelings will grow less, until at last you can entirely separate yourself from the mind and actually know it to be apart from yourself.

I want each one of my children to be a hundred times greater than I could ever be. Everyone of you must be a giant— must, that is my word. Obedience, readiness, and love for the cause— if you have these three, nothing can hold you back.
If you are really my children, you will fear nothing, stop at nothing. You will be like lions. We must rouse India and the whole world. No cowardice. I will take no nay. Do you understand?

As soon as I think that I am a little body, I want to preserve it, to protect it, to keep it nice, at the expense of other bodies; then you and I become separate.
Always discriminate--your body, your house, the people and the world are all absolutely unreal like a dream. Always think that the body is only an inert instrument. And the Atman within is your real nature.
As body, mind, or soul, you are a dream; you really are Being, Consciousness, Bliss (satchidananda). You are the God of this universe.
As long as I feel pain, I have identified myself with the body. When I feel joy or pleasure, I have identified myself with the body. But the high state will look with the same pleasure or blissfulness upon pleasure or upon pain...Every meditation is direct super-consciousness.

Man is an infinite circle whose circumference is nowhere, but the centre is located in one spot; and God is an infinite circle whose circumference is nowhere, but whose centre is everywhere.

Whenever darkness comes, assert the reality and everything adverse must vanish. For after all, it is but a dream. Mountain-high though the difficulties appear, terrible and gloomy though all things seem, they are but Maya. Fear not, and it is banished. Crush it, and it vanishes. Stamp upon it, and it dies.

In everyone is God, the Atman; all else is but dream, an illusion.
This is no world. It is God Himself. In delusion we call it world.
Delusion will vanish as the light becomes more and more effulgent, load after load of ignorance will vanish, and then will come a time when all else has disappeared and the sun alone shines.

The man who becomes angry never does a great amount of work, and the man whom nothing can make angry accomplishes so much. The man who gives way to anger, or hatred, or any other passion, cannot work; he only breaks himself to pieces, and does nothing practical. It is the calm, forgiving, equable, well-balanced mind that does the greatest amount of work.

Ask nothing; want nothing in return. Give what you have to give; it will come back to you, but do not think of that now.

It is our own mental attitude which makes the world what it is for us. Our thought make things beautiful, our thoughts make things ugly. The whole world is in our own minds. Learn to see things in the proper light. First, believe in this world, that there is meaning behind everything. Everything in the world is good, is holy and beautiful. If you see something evil, think that you do not understand it in the right light. Throw the burden on yourselves!

If you can think that infinite power, infinite knowledge and indomitable energy lie within you, and if you can bring out that power, you also can become like me.
Infinite patience, infinite purity, and infinite perseverance are the secret of success in a good cause.

I, for one, thoroughly believe that no power in the universe can withhold from anyone anything they really deserve.

If a man does not get food one day, he is troubled; if his son dies how agonising it is to him! The true Bhakta feels the same pangs in his heart when he yearns for God. The great quality of Bhakti is that it cleanses the mind, and the firmly established Bhakti for the Supreme Lord is alone sufficient to purify the mind.

Bhakti is intense love to God. When a man gets it he loves all, hates none; he becomes satisfied for ever. This love cannot be reduced to any earthly benefit, because so long as worldly desires last that kind of love does not come.

Blows are what awaken us and help to break the dream. They show us the insufficiency of this world and make us long to escape, to have freedom.

Everything in time, space, and causation is bound. The soul is beyond all time, all space, all causation. That which is bound is nature, not the soul.
Man is born to conquer nature and not to follow it.

God is still established upon His own majestic changeless Self. You and I try to be one with Him, but plant ourselves upon Nature, upon the trifles of daily life, on money, on fame, on human love and all these changing forms in Nature which make for bondage.

After every happiness comes misery; they may be far apart or near. The more advanced the soul, the more quickly does one follow the other. What we want is neither happiness nor misery. Both make us forget our true nature; both are chains--one iron, one gold; behind both is the Atman, who knows neither happiness nor misery. These are states, and states must ever change; but the nature of the Atman is bliss, peace, unchanging. We have not to get it, we have it; only wash away the dross and see it.

Great undertakings are always fraught with many obstacles.
Great work requires great and persistent effort for a long time. … Character has to be established through a thousand stumbles.

Have charity towards all beings. Pity those who are in distress. Love all creatures. Do not be jealous of anyone. Look not to the faults of others.

Comfort is no test of truth; on the contrary, truth is often far from being comfortable.

Concentration is the essence of all knowledge; nothing can be done without it. Ninety percent of thought force is wasted by the ordinary human being, and therefore he is constantly committing blunders; the trained man or mind never makes a mistake.
Concentration of the powers of the mind is our only instrument to help us see God. If you know one soul (your own), you know all souls, past, present and to come. The will concentrates the mind, certain things excite and control this will, such as reason, love, devotion, breathing, etc. The concentrated mind is a lamp that shows us every corner of the soul.

Condemn none: if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brothers, and let them go their own way.
All condemnation of others really condemns ourselves. Adjust the microcosm which is in your power to do and the macrocosm will adjust itself for you.

Why are people so afraid? The answer is that they have made themselves helpless and dependent on others. We are so lazy, we do not want to do anything ourselves. We want a Personal God, a Savior or a Prophet to do everything for us.

All the actions that we see in this world, all the movements in human society, all the works that we have around us, are simply the display of thought, the manifestation of the will of man.

The true Bhakta's love is this burning madness, before which everything else vanishes for him. The whole universe is to him full of love and love alone; that is how it seems to the lover. So when a man has this love in him, he becomes eternally blessed, eternally happy; the blessed madness of divine love alone can cure for ever the disease of the world that is in us.

Where can we go to find God if we cannot see Him in our own hearts and in every living being.
God is to be worshipped as the one beloved, dearer than everything in this and next life.
Devotion to duty is the highest form of worship of God.

Self-realization is to be attained by renunciation, by meditation—renunciation of all the senses, cutting the knots, the chains that bind us down to matter.
Self-sacrifice, not self-assertion, is the highest law of the universe....Religion comes with intense self-sacrifice. Desire nothing for yourself. Do all for others. This is to live and move and have your being in God.

You, as body, mind, or soul, are a dream, but what you really are, is Being, Consciousness, Bliss. You are the God of this universe. You are creating the whole universe and drawing it in.
You are in all, and you are all. Whom to avoid, and whom to take? You are the all in all. When this knowledge comes, delusion immediately vanishes.

To talk of evil and misery is nonsense, because they do not exist outside. If I am immune against all anger, I never feel angry. If I am proof against all hatred, I never feel hatred.

Do you love your fellow men? Where should you go to seek for God-- are not all the poor, the miserable, the weak, gods? Why not worship them first? Why go to dig a well on the shores of the Ganga?

In this external world, which is full of finite things, it is impossible to see and find the Infinite. The Infinite must be sought in that alone which is infinite, and the only thing infinite about us is that which is within us, our own soul. Neither the body, nor the mind, nor even our thoughts, nor the world we see around us, is infinite.
In this world of many, he who sees the One, in this ever-changing world, he who sees Him, who never changes, as the Soul of his own soul, as his own Self, he is free, he is blessed, he has reached the goal.
From Whom all beings are projected, in Whom all live, and unto Whom they all return; that is God.

I fervently wish no misery ever came near anyone; yet it is that alone that gives us an insight into the depths of our lives, does it not? In our moments of anguish, gates barred forever seem to open and let in many a flood of light.

If there is no strength in body and mind, the Atman cannot be realized. First you have to build the body by good nutritious food—then only will the mind be strong.

Everything that we perceive around us is struggling towards freedom, from the atom to the man, from insentient, lifeless particle of matter to the highest existence on earth, the human soul. The whole universe is in fact the result of this struggle for freedom.

Give up all argumentation and other distractions. Is there anything in dry intellectual jargon? It only throws the mind off its balance and disturbs it. Things of subtler plane has to be realized. Will talking do that? So give up all vain talk. Read only those books which has been writted by persons who have had realization.
Give up all desire for enjoyment in earth or heaven. Control the organs of the senses and control the mind. Bear every misery without even knowing that you are miserable. Think of nothing but spiritual freedom.
Give up jealously and conceit. Learn to work unitedly for others.
Give up the burden of all deeds to the Lord; give all, both good and bad. Do not keep the good and give only the bad. God helps those who do not help themselves.

Be perfectly resigned, perfectly unconcerned; then alone can you do any true work. No eyes can see the real forces; we can only see the results. Put out self, forget it; just let God work, it is His business.

The world is the great gymnasium where we come to make ourselves strong.

Do not hate anybody, because that hatred which comes out from you must, in the long run, come back to you. If you love, that love will come back to you, completing the circle.

He alone who is always awake to the idea of freedom, becomes free; he who thinks he is bound, endures life after life in the state of bondage.
We must always bear in mind that we are not going to be free, but are free already. Every idea that we are bound is a delusion.

In a conflict between the heart and the brain, follow your heart.

If you seek your own salvation, you will go to hell. It is the salvation of others that you must seek and even if you have to go to hell in working for others, that is worth more than to gain heaven by seeking your own salvation.

Be free; hope for nothing from anyone. I am sure if you look back upon your lives you will find that you were always vainly trying to get help from others which never came.

Our duty is to encourage every one in his struggle to live up to his own highest idea, and strive at the same time to make the ideal as near as possible to the Truth.

Do not go for glass beads leaving the mine of diamonds. This life is a great chance. What, seekest thou the pleasures of the world? He is the fountain of all bliss. See for the highest, aim at that highest, and you shall reach the highest.

That man has reached immortality who is disturbed by nothing material.
Tremendous purity, tremendous renunciation, is the one secret of spirituality. Neither through wealth, nor through progeny, but through renunciation alone is immortality to be reached, say the Vedas. Sell all that thou hast and give to poor, and follow me, says the Christ. So all great saints and prophets have expressed it, and have carried it out in their lives. How can great spirituality come without renunciation?

He who sees in this world of manifoldness that One running through all, in this world of death, he who finds that One Infinite Life, and in this world of insentience and ignorance, he who finds that One Light and Knowledge, unto him belongs eternal peace. Unto none else, unto none else.

In language and literature, in poetry and in arts, in everything we must point out not the mistakes that people are making in their thoughts and actions, but the way in which they will gradually be able to do these things better. Pointing out mistakes wounds a man's feelings. You have to grow from inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.

Karma-Yoga teaches us how to work for work's sake, unattached, without caring who is helped. and what for. The Karma-Yogi works because it is his nature, because he feels that it is good for him to do so, and he has no object beyond that. His position in this world is that of a giver, and he never cares to receive anything. He knows that he is giving and does not ask for anything in return and therefore he eludes the grasp of misery.

If you think that you are bound, you remain bound; you make your own bondage. If you know that you are free, you are free this moment. This is knowledge, knowledge of freedom. Freedom is the goal of all nature.

Man is not bound by any other laws excepting those which he makes for himself.

Each is responsible for the evil anywhere in this world....All that unites with the universal is virtue. All that separates is sin. You are a part of the Infinite. This is your nature. Hence you are your brother's keeper....Not one can attain liberty until every being (ant or dog) has liberty. Not one can be happy until all are happy. When you hurt anyone you hurt yourself, for you and your brother are one.

If a man works without any selfish motive in view, does he not gain anything? Yes, he gains the highest. Unselfishness is more paying, only people have not the patience to practise it. It is more paying from the point of view of health also. Love, truth and unselfishness are not merely moral figures of speech, but they form our highest ideal, because in them lies such a manifestation of power.

All expansion is life, all contraction is death. All love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction. Love is therefore the only law of life. He who loves lives, he who is selfish is dying. Therefore love for love’s sake, because it is law of life, just as you breathe to live.

Go on! Do not look back if you think you have done something that is not right. Now, do you believe you could be what you are today, had you not made those mistakes before? Bless your mistakes then. They have been angels unawares. Blessed be torture! Blessed be happiness! Do not care what be your lot. Hold on to the ideal. March on!

God is merciful to those whom He sees struggling heart and soul for realization. But remain idle, without any struggle, and you will see that His grace will never come.

Each one of our Yogas is fitted to make man perfect even without the help of the others, because they have all the same goal in view. The Yogas of work, wisdom, and of devotion are all capable of serving as direct and independent means for the attainment of Moksha.

When we come to nonattachment, then we can understand the marvelous mystery of the universe: how it is intense activity and at the same time intense peace, how it is work every moment and rest every moment.

A tremendous stream is flowing toward the ocean, carrying us all along with it; and though like straws and scraps of paper we may at times float aimlessly about, in the long run we are sure to join the Ocean of Life and Bliss.

It is criticizing each other that is at the root of all mischief. That is the chief factor in breaking down organizations.

Even the least work done for others awakens the power within; even thinking the least good of others gradually instills into the heart the strength of a lion.

In a day when you don't come across any problems — you can be sure that you are traveling in the wrong path.

Money does not pay, nor name; fame does not pay, nor learning. It is love that pays; it is character that cleaves its way through adamantine walls of difficulties.

If it is impossible to attain perfection here and now, there is no proof that we can attain perfection in any other life. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

Realize your true nature. That is all there is to do. Know yourself as you are—infinite spirit. That is practical religion. Everything else is impractical, for everything else will perish. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

Love is always mutual and reflective. You may hate me, and if I want to love you, you repulse me. But if I persist, in a month or a year you are bound to love me. It is a well-known psychological phenomenon. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

Anything that makes you weak physically, intellectually and spiritually, reject as poison. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

All the powers in the universe are already ours. It is we who have put our hands before our eyes and cry that it is dark.
All power is within you; you can do anything and everything. Believe in that, do not believe that you are weak; do not believe that you are half-crazy lunatics, as most of us do nowadays. You can do any thing and everything, without even the guidance of any one. Stand up and express the divinity within you. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

If faith in ourselves had been more extensively taught and practiced, I am sure a very large portion of the evils and miseries that we have would have vanished. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

Every one of us will have to become a prophet, and you are that already. Only know it. Never think there is anything impossible for the soul. It is the greatest heresy to think so. If there is a sin, this is the only sin — to say that you are weak, or others are weak. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

God is the ever-active providence, by whose power systems after systems are being evolved out of chaos, made to run for a time and again destroyed. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

If you are really pure, how do you see the impure? For what is within, is without. We cannot see impurity without having it inside ourselves. This is one of the practical sides of Vedanta, and I hope that we shall all try to carry it into our lives. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

Neither numbers nor powers nor wealth nor learning nor eloquence nor anything else will prevail, but purity, living the life, in one word, anubhuti, realisation. Let there be a dozen such lion-souls in each country, lions who have broken their own bonds, who have touched the Infinite, whose whole soul is gone to Brahman, who care neither for wealth nor power nor fame, and these will be enough to shake the world.

We reap what we sow. We are the makers of our own fate. None else has the blame, none has the praise.
Blame none for your own faults, stand upon your own feet, and take the whole responsibility upon yourselves. Say, This misery that I am suffering is of my own doing, and that very thing proves that it will have to be undone by me alone.

He is free, he is great, who turns his back upon the world, who has renounced everything, who has controlled his passion, and who thirsts for peace. One may gain political and social independence, but if one is a slave to his passions and desires, one cannot feel the pure joy of real freedom.

Work a little harder at meditation and it comes. You do not feel the body or anything else. When you come out of it after the hour, you have had the most beautiful rest you ever had in your life. That is the only way you ever give rest to your system. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

However we may receive blows, and however knocked about we may be, the Soul is there and is never injured. We are that Infinite. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

Come out into the universe of Light. Everything in the universe is yours, stretch out your arms and embrace it with love. If you every felt you wanted to do that, you have felt God.
All is the Self or Brahman. The saint, the sinner, the lamb, the tiger, even the murderer, as far as they have any reality, can be nothing else, because there is nothing else.
And what becomes of a man when he attains perfection? He lives a life of bliss infinite. He enjoys infinite and perfect bliss having obtained the only thing in which man ought to have pleasure, namely God, and enjoys the bliss with God. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

You must practice at least twice every day, and the best times are towards the morning and the evening. When night passes into day, and day into night, a state of relative calmness ensues. The early morning and the early evening are the two periods of calmness. Your body will have a like tendency to become calm at those times. We should take advantage of that natural condition and begin then to practise.
Whose meditation is real and effective? Who can really surrender to the will of God? Only the person whose mind has been purified by selfless work. -Swami Vivekananda, http://globalholisticmotivators.blogspot.com, www.truthbliss.com

By means of the constant effort to do good to others we are trying to forget ourselves; this forgetfulness of the self is the one great lesson we have to learn in life. Man thinks foolishly that he can make himself happy, and after years of struggle finds out at last that true happiness consists in killing selfishness and that no one can make him happy except himself.
Blessed are they whose bodies get destroyed in the service of others.

Oh, to live even for a day in the full light of freedom, to breathe the free air of simplicity! Isn't that the highest purity?
Out of purity and silence comes the word of power.

It (Truth) has to be made practical, to be made simple (for the highest truths are always simple), so that it may penetrate every pore of human society, and become the property of the highest intellects and the commonest minds, of the man, woman, and child at the same time...Let us try to make things simpler and bring about the golden days when every man will be a worshipper, and the Reality in every man will be the object of worship.

The Vedanta recognizes no sin it only recognizes error. And the greatest error, says the Vedanta is to say that you are weak, that you are a sinner, a miserable creature, and that you have no power and you cannot do this and that.

If a piece of burning charcoal be placed on a man’s head, see how he struggles to throw it off. Similar will be the struggle for freedom of those who really understand that they are slaves of nature.

Awake, awake, great ones! The world is burning with misery. Can you sleep? Let us call and call till the sleeping gods awake, till the god within answers to the call. What more is in life? What greater work?

Say So'ham, So'ham whatever comes. Tell yourself this even in eating, walking, suffering. Tell the mind this incessantly—that what we see never existed, that there is only I. Flash--the dream will break! Think day and night, this universe is zero, only God is. Have intense desire to get free.

Each soul is potentially divine. The goal is to manifest this Divinity within, by controlling nature, external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic control, or philosophy — by one or more or all of these — and be free. This is the whole of religion. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details.

Stand up, be bold, and take the blame on your own shoulders. Do not go about throwing mud at others; for all the faults you suffer from, you are the sole and only cause.

By studying the lives of all these great messengers, we find that each, as it were, was destined to play a part, and a part only; that the harmony consists in the sum total, and not in one note.
Books are infinite in number and time is short. The secret of knowledge is to take what is essential. Take that and try to live up to it.

No one can teach anybody. The teacher spoils everything by thinking that he is teaching. Thus Vedanta says that within man is all knowledge -- even in a boy it is so -- and it requires only an awakening, and that much is the work of a teacher.

The moment I have realized God sitting in the temple of every human body, the moment I stand in reverence before every human being and see God in him - that moment I am free from bondage, everything that binds vanishes, and I am free.
The more we come out and do good to others, the more our hearts will be purified, and God will be in them.

Feel nothing, know nothing, do nothing, have nothing, give up all to God, and say utterly, 'Thy will be done.' We only dream this bondage. Wake up and let it go.

Desire, ignorance, and inequality—this is the trinity of bondage.

Do not believe a thing because you read it in a book! Do not believe a thing because another has said it so! Find out the truth for yourself.

Never loved a husband the wife for the wife's sake or the wife the husband for the husband's sake. It is God in the wife the husband loves, and God in the husband the wife loves. It is God in every one that draws us to the one we love, God in everything and in everybody that makes us love. God is the only love.

Doing work is not religion, but work done rightly leads to Freedom. In reality all pity is darkness, because whom to pity? Can you pity God? And is there anything else? Thank God for giving you this world as a moral gymnasium to help your development, but never imagine you can help the world.
Drill yourself to be thoroughly submissive. Get rid of the I. No humbuggism. Then you can get rid of the idea of duty; for all is His. Then you go on, naturally, forgiving, forgetting, etc.
Duty becomes a disease with us; it drags us ever forward... This duty, this idea of duty is the midday summer sun which scorches the innermost soul of mankind... The only true duty is to be unattached and to work as free beings, to give up all work unto God.

God is to be worshipped as the one beloved, dearer than everything in this and next life.
In one word, this ideal is that you are divine.

Every man is a slave except the Yogi. He is a slave to food, to air, to his wife, to his children, to a dollar, slave to a nation, slave to name and fame, and to a thousand things in the world. The man who is not controlled by any one of these bondages is alone a real man, a real Yogi.

The highest men are calm, silent and unknown. They are the men who really know the power of thoughts; they are sure that, even if they go into a cave and close the door and simply think five true thoughts and then pass away, these five thoughts of theirs will live through eternity. Indeed such thoughts will penetrate through the mountains, cross the oceans, and travel through the world.

The essence of Vedanta is that there is but one Being and that every soul is that Being in full, not a part of that Being.
The God in you is the God in all. If you have not known this, you have known nothing. How can there be difference? It is all one. Every being is the temple of the Most High; if you can see that, good, if not, spirituality has yet to come to you.

So long as there is desire or want, it is a sure sign that there is imperfection. A perfect, free being cannot have any desire.

Three great gifts we have : first, a human body. (The human mind is the nearest reflection of God, we are His own image.) Second, the desire to be free. Third, the help of a noble soul who has crossed the ocean of delusion, as a teacher. When you have these three, bless the Lord; you are sure to be free.

Stand up, be bold, and take the blame on your own shoulders. Do not go about throwing mud at others; for all the faults you suffer from, you are the sole and only cause.

The first sign that you are becoming religious is that you are becoming cheerful. When a man is gloomy that may be dyspepsia, but it is not religion. To the Yogi, everything is bliss, every human face that he sees brings cheerfulness to him. That is the sign of a virtuous man. What business have you with clouded faces? It is terrible. If you have a clouded face, do not go out that day, shut yourself up in your room. What right have you to carry this disease out into the world.

That which is nearest is least observed. The Atman is the nearest of the near, therefore a careless and unsteady mind gets no clue to the Atman. But one who is alert, calm, self-restrained, and discriminating, ignores the external world and, diving more and more into the inner world, realizes the glory of the Atman and becomes great.
The Background, the Reality, of everyone is that same Eternal, Ever Blessed, Ever Pure, and Ever Perfect One. It is the Atman, the Soul, in the saint and the sinner, in the happy and the miserable, in the beautiful and the ugly, in men and in animals; it is the same throughout. It is the Shining One.

What is the proof of God? Direct perception, Pratyaksha. The proof of this wall is that I perceive it. God has been perceived by all who want to perceive Him. But this perception is no sense perception at all; it is supersensuous, superconscious.

As gradually your heart gets purified by work, you will come to feel the truth that your own Self is pervading all beings and all things. Thus it is that doing good to others constitutes a way, a means of revealing one's own Self or Atman.

The conviction has grown in my mind after all my travels in various lands that no great cause can succeed without an organization.

The greatest help to spiritual life is meditation. In meditation we divest ourselves of all material conditions and feel our divine nature. We do not depend upon any external help in meditation. The touch of the soul can paint the brightest color even in the dingiest places; it can cast a fragrance over the vilest thing; it can make the wicked divine--and all enmity, all selfishness is effaced.

When once you consider an action, do not let anything dissuade you. Consult your heart, not others, and then follow its dictates.

The good live for others alone. The wise man should sacrifice himself for others. I can secure my own good only by doing you good. There is no other way ,none whatsoever.
This life is short, the vanities of the world are transient, but they alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive.

Give love, give help, give service, give any little thing you can, but keep out barter.
It is said in the Shastra that those who serve the servants of God are His greatest servants. So you will bear this in mind...
What is now wanted is a combination of the greatest heart with the highest intellectuality, of infinite love with infinite knowledge.
Give me few men and women who are pure and selfless and I shall shake the world.
The nearer we are to God, the less we will have occasions to cry or weep. The further we are from God, the more will long faces come. The more we know God, the more misery vanishes.

There cannot be friendship without equality.

The disciple must have great power of endurance. Life seems comfortable; and you find the mind behaves well when everything is going well with you. But if something goes wrong, your mind loses its balance. That is not good. Bear all evil and misery without one murmur of hurt, without one thought of unhappiness, resistance, remedy, or retaliation. That is true endurance; and that you must acquire.

He who grumbles at the little thing that has fallen to his lot to do, will grumble at everything. Always grumbling he will lead a miserable life, and everything will be a failure. But that man who does his duty as he goes, putting his shoulder to the wheel, will see the light, and higher and higher duties will fall to his share.

We must overcome difficulty by constant practice. We must learn that nothing can happen to us unless we make ourselves susceptible to it.

To the person who desires nothing and does not get entangled in desires, the manifold changes of nature are one panorama of beauty and sublimity.

Side by side, in the child, should be developed the power of concentration and detachment.

Stand upon the Atman, then only can we truly love the world. Take a very, very high stand; knowing our universal nature, we must look with perfect calmness upon all the panorama of the world.

When you think you are a body, are apart from the universe; when you think; you are a soul, you are a spark from the great Eternal Fire; when you think you are the Âtman (Self), you are All.

When I Asked God for Strength He Gave Me Difficult Situations to Face When I Asked God for Brain & Brown He Gave Me Puzzles in Life to Solve When I Asked God for Happiness He Showed Me Some Unhappy People When I Asked God for Wealth He Showed Me How to Work Hard When I Asked God for Favors He Showed Me Opportunities to Work Hard When I Asked God for Peace He Showed Me How to Help Others God Gave Me Nothing I Wanted He Gave Me Everything I Needed.

We have seen that it is the subjective world that rules the objective. Change the subject and the object is bound to change; purify yourself, and the world is bound to be purified.

Story:Tomorrow I will try again, God willing

When the great Sufi mystic, Hasan, was dying, somebody asked "Hasan, who was your master?"

He said, "I had thousands of masters. If I just relate their names it will take months, years and it is too late. But three masters I will certainly tell you about.

One was A THIEF. Once I got lost in the desert, and when I reached a village it was very late, everything was closed. But at last I found one man who was trying to make a hole in the wall of a house. I asked him where I could stay and he said 'At this time of night it will be difficult, but you can stay with me -- if you can stay with a thief.'
And the man was so beautiful. I stayed for one month! And each night he would say to me, 'Now I am going to my work. You rest, you pray.' When he came back I would ask 'Could you get anything?' He would say, 'Not tonight. BUT TOMORROW I WILL TRY AGAIN, GOD WILLING.' He was never in a state of hopelessness, he was always happy.

When I was meditating and meditating for years on end and nothing was happening, many times the moment came when I was so desperate, so hopeless, that I thought to stop all this nonsense. And suddenly I would remember the thief who would say every night, 'God willing, tomorrow it is going to happen.'

And my second master was A DOG. I was going to the river, thirsty and a dog came. He was also thirsty. He looked into the river, he saw another dog there -- his own image -- and became afraid. He would bark and run away, but his thirst was so much that he would come back. Finally, despite his fear, he just jumped into the water, and the image disappeared. And I knew that a message had come to me from God: ONE HAS TO JUMP IN SPITE OF ALL FEARS.

And the third master was A SMALL CHILD. I entered a town and a child was carrying a lit candle. He was going to the mosque to put the candle there.
Just joking, I asked the boy, 'Have you lit the candle yourself?' He said, 'Yes sir.' And I asked, 'There was a moment when the candle was unlit, then there was a moment when the candle was lit. Can you show me the source from which the light came?'
And the boy laughed, blew out the candle, and said, 'Now you have seen the light going. Where has it gone? You will tell me!'

MY EGO WAS SHATTERED, my whole knowledge was shattered. And that moment I felt my own stupidity. Since then I dropped all my knowledgeability.
It is true that I had no master. That does not mean that I was not a disciple -- I ACCEPTED THE WHOLE EXISTENCE AS MY MASTER. My disciplehood was a greater involvement than yours is. I trusted the clouds, the trees. I trusted existence as such. I had no master because I had millions of masters. I learned from every possible source. To be a disciple is a must on the path.

What does it mean to be a disciple? It means to be able to learn. to be available to learn to be vulnerable to existence. With a master you start learning to learn.

The master is a swimming pool where you can learn how to swim. Once you have learned, all the oceans are yours.

SRI YUKTESWAR GIRI QUOTES

To keep company with the guru is not only to be in physical presence (as this is sometimes impossible), but mainly means to keep him in our hearts and to be one with him in principle and to attune ourselves with him.

Forget you were born a Hindu, and don't be an American. Take the best of them both. Be your true self, a child of God. Seek and incorporate into your being the best qualities of all your brothers, scattered over the earth in various races.

Do not confuse understanding with a larger vocabulary. Sacred writings are beneficial in stimulating desire for inward realization, if one stanza at a time is slowly assimilated. Otherwise, continual intellectual study may result in vanity, false satisfaction, and undigested knowledge.

Forget the past. The vanished lives of all men are dark with many shames. Human conduct is ever unreliable until anchored in the Divine. Everything in future will improve if you are making a spiritual effort now.

“..So you have inexplicably failed to isolate The Supreme Power in your test tubes!” Masters gaze was stern. “I recommend a new experiment: examine your thoughts unremittingly for twenty-four hours. Then wonder no longer at God’s absence.”

The Lord responds to all and works for all. Just as He sent rain at my plea, so He fulfills any sincere desire of the devotee. Seldom do men realize how often God heeds their prayers. He is not partial to a few, but listens to everyone who approaches Him trustingly. His children should ever have implicit faith in the loving-kindness of their Omnipresent Father.

The deeper the realization of a man, the more he influences the whole universe by his subtle spiritual vibrations, and the less he himself is affected by the phenomenal flux.

I heard my mother remark occasionally: 'A man who accepts a job under anyone is a slave.' That impression became so indelibly fixed that even after my marriage I refused all positions. I met expenses by investing my family endowment in land. Moral: Good and positive suggestions should instruct the sensitive ears of children. Their early ideas long remain sharply etched.

The body is a treacherous friend. Give it its due; no more. Pain and pleasure are transitory; endure all dualities with calmness, trying at the same time to remove yourself beyond their power. Imagination is the door through which disease as well as healing enters. Disbelieve in the reality of sickness even when you are ill; an unrecognized visitor will flee!

Ordinary love is selfish, darkly rooted in desires and satisfactions. Divine love is without condition, without boundary, without change. The flux of the human heart is gone forever at the transfixing touch of pure love.

The darkness of maya is silently approaching. Let us hie homeward within.

“Those who remove our troubles, dispel our doubts, and bestow peace are true teachers. They perform a Godlike work. Their opposites (those who increase our doubts and difficulties) are harmful to us and should be avoided like poison.”

Forget the outward symbols of renunciation, which may injure you by inducing a false pride. Nothing matters except your steady, daily spiritual advancement; for that, use Kriya Yoga.

There is a deeper astrology, not dependent on the testimony of calendars and clocks. Each man is a part of the Creator, or Cosmic Man; he has a heavenly body as well as one of earth. The human eye sees the physical form, but the inward eye penetrates more profoundly, even to the universal pattern of which each man is an integral and individual part.

The world illusion, maya, is individually called avidya, literally, not-knowledge, ignorance, delusion. Maya or avidya can never be destroyed through intellectual conviction or analysis, but solely through attaining the interior state of nirbikalpa Samadhi.

A worthy leader has the desire to serve, not to dominate.

If man's sleep be deep and dreamless, for several hours he is able to transfer his consciousness, or sense of I-ness, to the causal body; such sleep is revivifying.

All creation is governed by law. The principles that operate in the outer universe, discoverable by scientists are called natural laws. But there are subtle laws that rule the hidden spiritual planes and the inner realm of consciousness; these principles are knowable through the science of yoga. It is not the physicist but the Self realized master who comprehends the true nature of matter. By such knowledge Christ was able to restore the servant's ear after it had been severed by one of the disciples

"Just as the purpose of eating is to satisfy hunger, not greed, so the sex instinct is designed for the propagation of the species according to natural law, never for the kindling of insatiable longings," he said. "Destroy wrong desires now; otherwise they will follow you after the astral body is torn from its physical casing. Even when the flesh is weak, the mind should be constantly resistant. If temptation assails you with cruel force, overcome it by impersonal analysis and indomitable will. Every natural passion can be mastered.
Roam in the world as a lion of self-control; see that the frogs of weakness don’t kick you around.
A true devotee is finally freed from all instinctive compulsions. He transforms his need for human affection into aspiration for God alone - a love solitary because omnipresent.

My guru Swami Sri Yukteswar wisely counselled: "Throw the dog a bone" - give the body its due, neither pampering nor abusing it, and then forget the body.

So long as you breathe the free air of earth, you are under obligation to render grateful service. He alone who has fully mastered the breathless state is freed from cosmic imperatives.

"Be comfortable within your purse. Extravagance will buy you discomfort."

“The root of pain is egoistic actions, which (being based on delusions) lead to misery.”
Remember that finding God will mean the funeral of all sorrows.

“The eight bondages or snares are hatred, shame, fear, grief, condemnation, race prejudice, pride of family and smugness. Removal of the eight bondages leads to magnanimity of the Heart. “

Look fear in the face and it will cease to trouble you.

The rishis wrote in one sentence profundities that commentating scholars busy themselves over for generations. Endless literary controversy is for sluggard minds. What more quickly liberating thought than ‘God is’ - nay, ‘God’?

Good manners without sincerity are like a beautiful dead lady.
Straightforwardness without civility is like a surgeon's knife, effective but unpleasant. Candor with courtesy is helpful and admirable.

Wrath springs from thwarted desires. I do not expect anything from others, so their actions cannot be in opposition to wishes of mind.

A man of realization does not perform any miracles until he receives an inward sanction. God does not wish the secrets of His creation revealed promiscuously*. Also every individual in the world has an inalienable right to his free will. A saint will not encroach on that independence.

When this love, the heavenly gift of Nature, appears in the heart, it removes all causes of excitation from the system and cools it down to a perfectly normal state; and, invigorating the vital powers, expels all foreign matters- the germs of diseases-by natural ways (perspiration and so forth). It thereby makes man perfectly healthy in body and mind, And enables him to understand properly the guidance of Nature.

Parambrahma (Spirit or God) is everlasting, complete without beginning or end. It is one, indivisible Being.

The Holy Sound Pranava Sabda appears spontaneously through the culture of Sraddha the energetic tendency of heart’s natural love, Veerya the moral courage, Smiriti the true conception and Samadhi the true concentration.

Saintliness is not dumbness! Divine perceptions are not incapacitating! The active expression of virtue gives rise to the keenest intelligence.

“In shallow men the fish of little thoughts cause much commotion. In oceanic minds the whales of inspiration make hardly a ruffle.

“Grieve not for me....You and I shall smile together, so long as our two forms appear different in the maya-dream of God. Finally we shall merge as one in the Cosmic Beloved; our smiles shall be His smile, our unified song of joy vibrating throughout eternity to be broadcast to God-tuned souls!”

Quotations there have been, in superabundance. But what original commentary can you supply, from the uniqueness of your particular life? What holy text have you absorbed and made your own? In what ways have these timeless truths renovated your nature? Are you content to be a hollow victrola, mechanically repeating the words of other men?

SAI BABA QUOTES

Why fear when I am here?
I am formless and everywhere
I am in everything and beyond. I fill all space.
All that you see taken together is Myself.
All that is seen is my form: ant, fly, prince, and pauper.
I do not shake or move.

Life is a song - sing it.
Life is a game - play it.
Life is a challenge - meet it.
Life is a dream - realize it.
Life is a sacrifice - offer it.
Life is love - enjoy it.

Do not be obsessed by egotism, imagining that you are the cause of action: everything is due to God.

There is a wall of separation between oneself and others and between you and me. Destroy this wall!

You must be a lotus, unfolding its petals when the sun rises in the sky, unaffected by the slush where it is born or even the water which sustains it!

What matters is to live in the present, live now, for every moment is now. It is your thoughts and acts of the moment that create your future. The outline of your future path already exists, for you created its pattern by your past.

The four sadhanas and the six Sastras are not necessary. Just has complete trust in your guru: it is enough..

Love one another and help others to rise to the higher levels, simply by pouring out love. Love is infectious and the greatest healing energy.

If formless meditation is difficult, then think of My form just as you see it here. With such meditation, the difference between subject and object is lost and the mind dissolves in unity.
Meditate on what you read and think of God.
Meditate on Me either with form or without form, that is pure bliss.

Do not be idle: work, utter God’s name and read the scriptures.

Be contented and cheerful with what comes.

Whatever creature comes to you, human or otherwise, treat it with consideration.

Man learns through experience, and the spiritual path is full of different kinds of experiences. He will encounter many difficulties and obstacles, and they are the very experiences he needs to encourage and complete the cleansing process.

What do we lose by another’s good fortune? Let us celebrate with them, or strive to emulate them.

Let love flow so that it cleanses the world. Then man can live in peace, instead of the state of turmoil he has created through his past ways of life, with all those material interests and earthly ambitions.

What is new in the world? Nothing. What is old in the world? Nothing. Everything has always been and will always be.

You say: It’s impossible
Sai says: All things are possible
You say: I’m too tired
Sai says: I will give you rest
You say: Nobody really loves me
Sai says: I love you
You say: I can’t go on
Sai says: My grace is sufficient
You say: I can’t figure things out
Sai says: I will direct your steps
You say: I can’t do it
Sai says: You can do all things
You say: I’m not able
Sai says: I am able
You say: It’s not worth it
Sai says: It will be worth it
You say: I can’t forgive myself
Sai says: I FORGIVE YOU
You say: I can’t manage
Sai says: I will supply all your needs
You say: I’m afraid
Sai says: I have not given you a spirit of fear
You say: I’m always worried and frustrated
Sai says: Cast all your cares on ME
You say: I don’t have enough faith
Sai says: I’ve given everyone a measure of faith
You say: I’m not smart enough
Sai says: I give you wisdom
You say: I feel all alone
Sai says: I will never leave you or forsake you..

“Before you speak ask yourself: Is it kind, is it necessary, it is true, does it improve upon the silence?”

Wealth is really a means to work out dharma. If one uses it merely for personal enjoyment, it is vainly spent.

A house must be built on solid foundations if it is to last. The same principle applies to man, otherwise he too will sink back into the soft ground and becomes swallowed up by the world of illusion.

If we see all actions as God’s doing, we will be unattached and free from karmic bondage.

Guru and his disciple should love and serve each other as one. There is no distinction nor any difference between them. Both are one and one cannot live without the other. Those who see any difference between them are yet unripe and not perfect

Q: Somebody asked Baba that why do we need Guru or God's Grace?
Baba answered : " The path of this world is dangerous & difficult. If there is a guide with you, he will take you straight to your destination, avoiding wolves, tigers & ditches on the way. If there will be no Guide, there is a danger of your being lost in the jungles or falling into the ditches. Same is the importance of Guru or God's grace in your life. "

Meditation(Yoga), Sacrifice, Penance and Knowledge are the means to attain God. If you do not succeed in this by any means, in vain is your human birth.

"Human body is considered to be filthy, but if we reject or neglect it we loose the chance of God-vision and if we over-indulge in it and run after the sense-enjoyments because it is precious we go to hell. Therefore the proper course should be that the Human body should neither be neglected nor fondled, but should be properly cared for, just as a traveler on a Horse-back takes care of his horse on the way, till he reaches his destination and returns home. Thus the Human body should be ever used to attain God vision or Self-realization, which is the supreme end of life. "

Before the senses, mind and Intellect enjoy their objects, first God should be remembered. Senses can never remain without their objects, if those objects are first offered to God, the attachment for them will naturally vanish. In the same way all subtle thoughts including desire, anger, avarice should be first offered to the Guru. If this practice is followed the Lord will help you in eradicating all the vices.

"Anger is a deadly enemy. It burns our all Shubh karmas (Good deeds), Beware of it.."

"When we begin to practice discrimination we come to know that this world is transient & Unreal and our passion for worldly things become less and ultimately we get a feeling of Non-attachment for them. When we know that God which is no more than our guru, is the sole reality and god himself transcends and besets this seeming universe, then we begin to worship.

Get dispassion for the things and enjoyments of the world and have your mind turned to the Lord. It is essential for Self-progress.

Unless Egoism is dropped, Greed is vanished and the Mind becomes pure by being desire-less, the sensation of true form of God is not possible.

From Begining to end, one should live one-pointedly in whatever condition decided by fate and be contented. Never Worry."

There is no difference between Guru and God. He who sees any difference in them, sees God nowhere.

If anyone does anything evil unto you, do not retaliate. If you can do anything, Do some good unto others.

Human soul after being deluded by Maya forgets his true nature of Pure-consciousness-knowledge bliss and thinks that he is the doer and thus entangles himself in endless miseries. The only way to deliverance is the loving devotion towards the Guru's feet.

Knowledge or Self-realization is not possible unless there is the prior act of removing your personal desires, impulses, sins which is so hidden and so difficult to get rid of.

No one whether he be your Father, Mother, Spouse, Brother or any other relation comes to our aid in attaining the goal of life (self-realization). We have to find out the path of Self-realization ourselves with the guidance of our spiritual guru.

Problems and difficulties surround you, just to move you and confirm your faith. We are tested as it were. If we only hold on steadily to Baba with full faith and continue our endeavors, our efforts will be ultimately crowned with success for sure.

People should live happily in this world but they should be ever cautious and achieve the aim of their life, viz self-realization. We get human body as a result of merits in the past births and it is worthwhile that with its aid we should attain devotion and liberation in this life. So we should never be lazy but always be on the alert to gain the supreme goal of our life.

You must bear the fruit -good or bad of your actions. If it is incomplete, suicide won't help you. You have to take another birth and suffer again. So instead of killing yourself, why not suffer for sometime and finish up the fruit of your past deeds and be done with it once and for all.

Surrendering body, mind, intellect and ego  to the Guru is the Supreme Bhakti. Dedication to Guru or God is real surrender. Then God or Guru takes his seat in your heart and drives the chair of your body and soul to the city of Moksha and Ananda.

Our true Guru is God alone.  He transcends all Good qualities. He is beyond all forms. He is the only one who can drive out the darkness of Ignorance and light the lamp of Supreme Wisdom.

My true disciples should have the virtues of:- Forgiveness, Calmness, Disinterestedness, Charity, Benevolence, Control of mind and Egolessness.

Unless a man has turned away from wickedness and stopped from doing wrong and has entirely composed himself and unless his mind is at rest, he cannot gain self-realization even by means of knowledge.

Wealth is really a means to work out dharma. If one uses it merely for personal enjoyment, it is vainly spent.

LORD MAHAVIRA QUOTES

O Self! Practise Truth, and nothing but Truth.
Enlightened by the light of Truth, the wise transcends death.
Truth alone is the essence in the world.
A truthful man is treated as reliable as the mother, as venerable as the guru (preceptor) and as beloved as the one who commands knowledge.
Truthfulness indeed is tapa (penance). In truthfulness do reside self-restraint and all other virtues. Just as the fish can live only in the sea, so can all other virtues reside in truthfulness alone.

Fight with yourself, why fight with external foes? He, who conquers himself through himself, will obtain happiness.
There is no enemy out of your soul. The real enemies live inside yourself, they are anger, proud, curvedness, greed, attachmentes and hate.
It is better to win over self than to win over a million enemies.

Dont be proud if you gain. Nor be sorry if you lose.

Every soul is independent. None depends on another.
Every soul is in itself absolutely omniscient and blissful. The bliss does not come from outside.

Have compassion towards all living beings. Hatred leads destruction.
Every living being has a strong desire to live and we must respect this in our thoughts and actions.
Silence and Self-control is non-violence.
Respect for all living beings is non violence.
Non violence is the highest religion.

God is neither the creator nor the destroyer of the universe. He is merely a silent observer and omniscient.

All human beings are miserable because of their own ignorance, and they themselves can be happy by acquiring proper knowledge.

A living body is not merely an integration of limbs and flesh but it is the abode of the soul which potentially has perfect perception (Anant-darshana), perfect knowledge (Anant-jnana), perfect power (Anant-virya), and perfect bliss (Anant-sukha).

Study of scriptures (Svadhyaya) is of five kinds: 1. Reading of scriptural texts, 2. Questioning, 3. Repitition, 4. pondering over and 5. narration of religious discourses opening with auspicious praise(of Jina).
He who studies scriptures with devotion and without any desire for personal praise and honour but for purging of his karmic pollution will have the benefit of scriptural knowledge which conduces to happiness.

Live and allow others to live; hurt no one; life is dear to all living beings.
Just as you do not like misery, in the same way others also do not like it. Knowing this, you should do unto them what you want them to do unto you.

The valiant does not tolerate indulgence, nor does he tolerate abhorrence. As he is pleased with his own self, he is not attached to anything.

The unenlightened takes millions of lives to extirpate the effects of karma whereas a man possessing spiritual knowledge and discipline obliterates them in a single moment.
As gold does not cease to be gold even if it is heated in the fire; an enlightened man does not cease to be enlightened on being tortured by the effect of karma.

Pride, anger, carelessness, illness and idleness are the five obstacles in the path of acquiring knowledge.
Anger spoils good relations, pride destroys humility, deceit destroys amity and greed destroys everything.
Conquer anger by forgiveness, pride by humility, deceit by straight-forwardness and greed by contentment.

If one undertakes retrospection of the day's events, one must do it regularly at the appointed hour, not fitfully, not doing it today, neglecting to do it tomorrow and the day after and then taking it up again on the fourth day. Such irregular practice is not conducive to the confirmation of the habit of retrospection.

Anger begets more anger, and forgiveness and love lead to more forgiveness and love.

There is nothing as fearful as death, and there is no suffering as great as birth. Be free from the fear of both birth and death, by doing away with attachment to the body.

Only that man can take a right decision, whose soul is not tormented by the afflictions of attachment and aversion.

One should practise Dharma before old age creeps up, the senses become feeble and one falls a prey to all kinds of diseases.(For, it will not be possible to practise Dharma later with a feeble and incompetent body.)

Do not be in dread of the dreadful, the illness, the dis ease, the old age, and even the death or any other object of fear.

Only the one who has transcended fear can experience equanimity.
(One should reflect thus:) Let me treat all living beings with equanimity and none with enmity. Let me attain samadhi (tranquillity) by becoming free from expectations.
Where there is neither pain nor pleasure, neither suffering nor obstacle, neither birth nor death, there is emancipation(Nirvana).

Just as everybody keeps away from a burning fire, so do the evils remain away from an enlightened person

A man is seated on top of a tree in the midst of a burning forest. He sees all living beings perish. But he doesn't realize that the same fate is soon to overtake him also. That man is fool.

The five senses of the awakened always remain inactive. The five senses of the slumber always remain active. By means of the active five one acquires bondage while by means of the inactive five the bondage is severed.

There is no separate existence of God. Everybody can attain God-hood by making supreme efforts in the right direction.

If you want to cultivate a habit, do it without any reservation, till it is firmly established. Until it is so confirmed, until it becomes a part of your character, let there be no exception, no relaxation of effort.

The soul comes alone and goes alone, no one companies it and no one becomes its mate.

There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting

Birth is attended by death, youth by decay and fortune by misfortune. Thus everything in this world is momentary.

Can you hold a red-hot iron rod in your hand merely because some one wants you to do so? Then, will it be right on your part to ask others to do the same thing just to satisfy your desires? If you cannot tolerate infliction of pain on your body or mind by others' words and actions, what right have you to do the same to others through your words and deeds?

An indolent person can never be happy and a lethargic person can never acquire knowledge.A person with attachments cannot acquire renunciation and a person who is violent cannot be compassionate.

Those who are ignorant of the supreme purpose of life will never be able to attain nirvana (liberation) in spite of their observance of the vratas (vows) and niymas (rules) of religious conduct and practice of sila (celibacy) and tapas (penance).

Let me renounce the bondage of attachment and hatred, pride and meekness, curiosity, fear, sorrow, indulgence and abhorrence (in order to accomplish equanimity).
Let me give up attachment through unattachment. My soul will be my only support (in this practice of unattachment). (Hence) let me give up everything else.

The greatest mistake of a soul is non-recognition of its real self and can only be corrected by recognizing itself.

The knowledge acquired at a time when one is comfortable vanishes away when one begins to experience discomfort.Hence a Yogin ought to contemplate on the self in the midst of hardships keeping in mind his capacity for tolerance.

One who knows the spiritual (self) knows the external (world) too. He who knows the external world, knows the self also.

Just as fire is not quenched by the fuel and the ocean by thousands of rivers, similarly no living being is satisfied even with all the wealth of all the three worlds.

One who, even after knowing the whole universe, can remain unaffected and unattached is God.

RAMANA MAHARSHI QUOTES

You have to ask yourself the question ‘Who am I?’ This investigation will lead in the end to the discovery of something within you, which is behind the mind. Solve that great problem and you will solve all other problems.

The Question 'Who am I?' is not really meant to get the answer,
The Question 'Who am I?' is really meant to dissolve the questioner.

Mukti has to be gained in full awareness, because the Reality itself is pure awareness.

God, Guru and the Self are the same. After your bhakti to God has matured you, God comes in the shape of a Guru and from outside pushes your mind inside, while being inside as Self He draws you there from within.

'No one succeeds without effort... Those who succeed owe their success to perseverance.'

Everything is perfect in God's creation. Ignorance and suffering exist only in the minds of people.

That which is Bliss is also the Self. Bliss and the Self are not distinct and separate but are one and the same. And That alone is real.

Do not meditate - be!
Do not think that you are - be!
Don't think about being - you are!

Just as the sun gives light to the moon, the Heart lights the mind.

Happiness is inherent in man and is not due to external causes.

The Guru is both `external' and `internal'. From the `exterior' he [she] gives a push to the mind to turn inward; from the `interior' He pulls the mind towards the Self and helps in the quieting of the mind. That is guru's grace.

We imagine that we will realise that Self some time, whereas we are never anything but the Self.

What is ever present is pure existence. It has no past or future.

Your own Self-realization is the greatest service you can render the world.

Grace is ever present. All that is necessary is that you surrender to It.

Silence is most powerful. Speech is always less powerful than silence.

The Self cannot be found in books. You have to find it for yourself in yourself.

You ignore the doubter but try to solve the doubts...hold on to the doubter and the doubts will disappear.

The mind is born of the ego. The ego rises from the Self. Search the source of the ego and the Self is revealed. That alone remains.

What is fear? It is only a thought. If there is anything besides the Self there is reason to fear.

The life of action need not be renounced. If you meditate for an hour or two every day you can then carry on with your duties. If you meditate in the right manner then the current of mind induced will continue to flow even in the midst of your work.

Peace is your natural state. It is the mind that obstructs the natural state.

Pleasure and pain are only aspects of the mind. Our essential nature is happiness,

If you go on working with the light available, you will meet your Master, as he himself will be seeking you.

Silence is unceasing eloquence. It is the best language. There is a state when words cease and silence prevails.

Let what comes come. Let what goes go. Find out what remains.

If one realizes at heart what one's true nature is, one will find that it's infinite wisdom, truth and bliss, without beginning and end.

If the mind is happy, not only the body but the whole world will be happy.

You don't grow by acquiring something, Nor wither away by losing it. You remain what you always are.

The degree of freedom from unwanted thoughts and the degree of concentration on a single thought are the measures to gauge spiritual progress.

The fruit of action passes. But the act leaves behind the seed of further acts leading to an endless ocean of action; not at all to moksha.

Why should you worry about the future? You don't even know the present properly. Take care of the present and the future will take care of itself.

There is neither creation nor destruction, neither destiny nor free will, neitherpath nor achievement. This is the final truth.

To see God is to be God. There is no all apart from God for Him to pervade. He alone is.

All we need do is keep quiet.

The knowledge of oneself will be revealed only to the consciousness which is silent, clear and free from activity of the agitated and suffering mind.

All these universes, humans, objects, thoughts and events are merely pictures moving on the screen of Pure Consciousness, which alone is real. Shapes and phenomena pass away, but Consciousness remains ever.

The Lord who has fed you today will ever do so well. Therefore, live carefree, placing all your burden at His feet and having no thought of tomorrow or the future.

'Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside.'

How to see God? To see Him is to be consumed by Him.

The conception that there is a goal and a path to it, is wrong. We are the goal or peace always. To get rid of the notion that we are not peace is all that is required.

You need not aspire for or get any new state. Get rid of your present thoughts, that is all.

By remaining in contact with realised sages the man gradually loses the ignorance until its removal is complete. The eternal Self is thus revealed.

To realise the Self is to be still. What can be easier than that?

The aim is to reach the root of the 'I'sense, through constant suppression of the mental processes.

You are already That which you seek.

The body is itself a mere projection of the mind, and the mind is but a poor reflection of the radiant Heart.

To identify oneself with the body and yet seek happiness is like attempting to crossing a river on the back of an alligator. In truth, you are Spirit.

If concentration is made with the brain, sensations of heat and even headache ensue. Concentration has to be made in the heart, which is cool and refreshing. Relax and your meditation will be easy. Keep your mind steady by gently warding off all intruding thoughts, but without strain - soon you will succeed.

Whatever burdens are thrown on God, He bears them. Since the supreme power of God makes all things move, why should we, without submitting ourselves to it, constantly worry ourselves with thoughts as to what should be done and how, and what should not be done and how not? We know that the train carries all loads, so after getting on it why should we carry our small luggage on our head to our discomfort, instead of putting it down in the train and feeling at ease?

The final obstacle to meditation is ecstasy; when you feel great bliss and happiness, the tendency is to stay in that ecstasy. Do not yield to this (laya) but pass onto the sixth stage, which is great calm. The calm is higher than ecstasy and it merges into samadhi.

Take care of yourself. Let the world take care of itself. See your Self. If you are the body there is the gross world also. If you are spirit all is spirit alone.

When the mind is left without anything to cling to, it becomes still.

Have faith in God and in yourself; that will cure all. Hope for the best, expect the best, toil for the best and everything will come right for you in the end.

Keep an open mind, dive within and find out the Self. The truth will itself dawn upon you.

Your duty is to be and not to be this or that. 'I am that I am' sums up the whole truth.

The ego is the root of all diseases. Give it up.

The Ordainer controls the fate of souls in accordance with their prarabdhakarma (destiny to be worked out in this life, resulting from the balance sheet of actions in past lives). Whatever is destined not to happen will not happen, try as you may. Whatever is destined to happen will happen, do what you may to prevent it. This is certain. The best course, therefore, is to remain silent.

Guru is not the physical form. So the contact will remain even after the physical form of the Guru vanishes.

'Does free will prevail or fate?' is only for those who do not know the root of both. Those who have known the Self, the common source of freewill and of fate, have passed beyond them both and will not return to them.

Surrender is to give oneself up to the original cause of one's being.

Giving to others is really giving to oneself.

"Remain all the time steadfast in the heart. God will determine the future for you to accomplish the work. What is to be done will be done at the proper time. Don’t worry. Abide in the heart."

We are so engrossed with the objects or appearances revealed by the light that we pay no attention to the light.

Engage yourself in the living present. The future will take care of itself.

Meditation is your true nature now. You call it meditation, because there are other thoughts distracting you. When these thoughts are dispelled, you remain alone, i.e., in the state of meditation free from thoughts; and that is your real nature which you are now attempting to gain by keeping away other thoughts. Such keeping away of other thoughts is now called meditation. When the practice becomes firm, the real nature shows itself as the true meditation.

You know that you know nothing. Find out that knowledge.

There is only one state, that is consciousness, or awareness or existence. The three states of waking, dream and deep sleep cannot be real. They simply come and go. The real will always exist.

Reality is simply the loss of ego. Destroy the ego by seeking its identity. Because the ego is no entity it will automatically vanish and reality will shine forth by itself.

“Wanting to reform the world without discovering one's true self is like trying to cover the world with leather to avoid the pain of walking on stones and thorns. It is much simpler to wear shoes.”

There is never a moment when the Self is not; it is ever-present, here and now.

Find the source. You must reach the source without fail. The false `I' will disappear and the real `I' will realized. The former cannot exist apart from the latter. There is now wrong identification of the Self with the body, senses, etc. You proceed to discard these, and this is neti. This can be done only by holding to the one which cannot be discarded. That is iti[that which is].

Your business is simply to surrender and leave everything to me.

Time is only an idea. There is only the Reality. Whatever you think it is, it looks like that. If you call it time, it is time. If you call it existence, it is existence, and so on. After calling it time, you divide it into days and nights, months, years, hours, minutes, etc. Time is immaterial for the Path of Knowledge.

Transforming yourself is a means of giving light to the whole world.

Mind is consciousness which has put on limitations. You are originally unlimited and perfect. Later you take on limitations and become the mind.

Body, senses, mind, breath, sleep --All insentient and unreal --- Cannot be 'I'.

Purity of heart, self-restraint, evenness of temper, tenderness towards all beings, fortitude and freedom from desire, hatred and arrogance are the outstanding virtues of the sattvic mind.

There is no alternative for you but to accept the world as unreal if you are seeking the truth and the truth alone, for the simple reason that unless you give up the idea that the world is real your mind will always be after it.

You and I are the same. What I have done is surely possible for all. You are the Self now and can never be anything else. Throw your worries to the wind, turn within and find Peace.

'Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.'

“Stop looking outside for scraps of pleasure or fulfillment, for validation, security, or love – you have a treasure within that is infinitely greater than anything the world can offer.”

When you complain you make yourself a victim. Leave the situation, change the situation or accept it, all else is madness.

Nonresistance, non-judgment, and non-attachment are the three aspects of true freedom and enlightened living.

"When you wash your hands, when you make a cup of coffee, when you're waiting for the elevator - instead of indulging in thinking, these are all opportunities for being there as a still, alert presence."

Accept - then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it. Make it your friend and ally, not your enemy. This will miraculously transform your whole life.

You are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe, an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious of itself. What an amazing miracle.

Authentic human interactions become impossible when you lose yourself in a role.

The actual experience of awakening can only be in the present moment.

'All the things that truly matter, beauty, love, creativity, joy and inner peace arise from beyond the mind.'

'Being must be felt. It can't be thought.'

'Knowing yourself is to be rooted in Being, instead of lost in your mind.'

Be aware of your breathing. Notice how this takes attention away from your thinking and creates space.

The more you live in the present moment, the more the fear of death disappears.

The decision to make the present moment into your friend is the end of the ego.

Give up defining yourself - to yourself or to others. You won't die. You will come to life.

“The moment you become aware of the ego in you, it is strictly speaking no longer the ego, but just an old, conditioned mind-pattern. Ego implies unawareness. Awareness and ego cannot coexist.”

Most humans are never fully present in the now, because unconsciously they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss your whole life, which is never not now.

Every thought pretends that it matters so much. It wants to draw your attention in completely. Here is a new spiritual practice for you: don't take your thoughts too seriously.

“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.”

To offer no resistance to life is to be in a state of grace, ease, and lightness.

“Is there a difference between happiness and inner peace? Yes. Happiness depends on conditions being perceived as positive; inner peace does not.”

Your life has an inner purpose and an outer purpose. Inner purpose concerns Being and is primary. Outer purpose concerns doing and is secondary.

When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.

If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. Primary reality is within; secondary reality without.

Instead of asking, “what do I want from life?,” a more powerful question is, “what does life want from me?"

You don't have a life, you are life. The One Life, the one consciousness that pervades the entire universe and takes temporary form to experience itself as a stone or blade of grass, as an animal, a person, a star or a galaxy.

When listening to another person, don't just listen with your mind, listen with your whole body. Feel the energy field of your inner body as you listen. That takes attention away from thinking and creates a still space that enables you to truly listen without the mind interfering. You are giving the other person space - space to be. It is the most precious gift you can give.

“All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present.
Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry - all forms of fear - are caused by too much future, and not enough presence.
Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of nonforgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.”

There are three words that convey the secret of the art of living, the secret of all success and happiness: One with Life. Being one with life is being one with Now.

The greater part of human pain is unnecessary. It is self-created as long as the unobserved mind runs your life.

The pain that you create now is always some form of nonacceptance, some form ofunconscious resistance to what is.

The past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment in whaterver form. Both are illusions.

The power is in you. The answer is in you. And you are the answer to all your searches: you are the goal. You are the answer. It's never outside.

'The past has no power over the present moment.'

If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.

"Anything that you resent and strongly react to in another is also in you."

“This Too Shall Pass”

Stress is caused by being 'here' but wanting to be 'there'

“The ego says, ‘I shouldn’t have to suffer,’ and that thought makes you suffer so much more. It is a distortion of the truth, which is always paradoxical. The truth is that you need to say yes to suffering before you can transcend it.”

If you had not suffered as you have, there would be no depth to you as a human being, no humility, no compassion.

When you surrender to what is and so become fully present, the past ceases to have any power. You do not need it anymore. Presence is the key. Now is the key.

"You get there by realizing you are already there."

"The realm of consciousness is much vaster than thought can grasp. When you no longer believe everything you think, you step out of thought and see clearly that the thinker is not who you are."

Strictly speaking, you don't think: Thinking happens to you.

'Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them.'

The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but thought about it. Be aware of the thoughts you are thinking.

Spiritual seekers look for self-realization or enlightenment in the future. To be a seeker implies that you need the future. If this is what you believe, it becomes true for you: you will need time until you realize that you don't need time to be who you are.

'In today's rush we all think too much, seek too much, want too much and forget about the joy of just Being.'

There's something in everybody that longs for that awakening to be more true to yourself.

Most humans are never fully present in the now, because unconsciously they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss your whole life, which is never not now.

You will be free to let go of your unhappiness the moment you recognize it as unintelligent. Negativity is not intelligent. It is always of the ego.

You cannot be both unhappy and fully present in the Now.

You are the universe, expressing itself as a human for a little while.

The world can only change from within.

'Worry pretends to be necessary but serves no useful purpose'

Do not resist the pain. Allow it to be there. Surrender to the grief, despair, fear, loneliness, or whatever form the suffering takes. Witness it without labeling it mentally. Embrace it. Then see how the miracle of surrender transmutes deep suffering into deep peace. This is your crucifixion. Let it become your resurrection and ascension.

'You are here to enable the divine purpose of the Universe to unfold. That is how important you are!'

Bring into play the almighty power within you, so that on the stage of life you can fulfill your high destined role.

Will power is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.

Be unshakable in your conviction that you have all the potentialities of great success

Mind is the creator of everything. You should therefore guide it to create only good. If you cling to a certain thought with dynamic will power, It finally assumes a tangible outward form. When you are able to employ your will for constructive purposes, You become the controller of your destiny.

Always remember, nothing can touch you if you inwardly love God.

Remain calm, serene, always in command of yourself. You will then find out how easy it is to get along.

“Every morning I offer my body, my mind and any ability that I posses, to be used by Thee, O infinite creator, in whatever way Thou dost choose to express Thyself through me. I know that all work is Thy work, and that no task is too difficult or too menial when offered to Thee in loving service.”

If you find true joy in this life, you will have it now and in the afterlife too.

The greatest sin is to call yourself a sinner. You are a child of God. Although gold can be covered with mud for centuries, it remains always gold. So the pure gold of the soul can be covered over with the mud of delusion for aeons, but in its true nature it remains forever undefiled.

It is not what you read that give you liberation but what you do with what you read.

Everything else can wait but your search for God cannot wait.
